Dubuque man gets a life sentence for gun-related crimes

The Dubuques man convicted of shooting an off-duty police officer during an off hours shooting spree in June had an extensive history of violence.

The shooting happened during a disturbance outside a home on Interstate 80.

A man was arrested and charged with felony second-degree murder.

The Dubue County district attorney’s office said in a news release that the man fired three shots, one of which struck a police officer in the chest.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Tuesday.

Dubuque Police Chief Richard Daugherty says the suspect’s actions and the shooting were not in accordance with community standards.

Daugherty said that the suspect is a lifelong gang member who has been involved in several violent crimes and drug dealing and that the victim was a valued member of the community.
